Welcome to District Commons :) We have a freespace in the Haight street area under our collective care. The social logic of the freespaces is not that they are “free”—they have costs associated with them! These are liberatory spaces, where we are all responsible for taking care of them. They rely on financial patronage and donations, as well as active stewardship & participation to look after them & allow them to flourish. They are spaces for learning about the power of community both intellectually and through immersive experiences. These are spaces where we learn to be otherwise through our collective action and care. Read more of the theory behind this here. Donate or become a monthly patron here.
The Radical Reading Room (aka TR³; located at 438 Haight St) is a cozy, inclusive, free space primarily for quiet reading, writing & study. Established in May 2021, it is a community living room that, during most of its operating schedule, intends to host open hours for the public, at no charge. It is hosted entirely by volunteers. Events and co-working are welcome!
We meet regularly to coordinate on vision, fundraising, and events. Our curated book selection (check with a volunteer before donating books here) centers around social, political & economic futures, sociocultural movements, and societal transformation. These books are not to be taken out, but all are welcome to read them, or bring your own.
Make a donation.
We rely on donations and patronage to keep these spaces free.
